Juan Atkins provides 10 essential tips to make it in the music industry. This is done through a collage of interviews, talking through how he divides his time, making his own sounds, being influenced by George Clinton and being inspired by books within the technological revolution, notably 'The Third Wave'. A future-focused man who considers the bigger picture, this is one to watch for young and aspiring musicians/artists.
Juan Atkins was born in Detroit, Michigan. His father is a concert promoter. At an early age, he played guitar and bass guitar in funk/garage bands with his friends. After his parents split, he moved to Belleville, Michigan. In junior high school, he met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. The three would later be known as The Belleville Three. At the age of 15, he bought his first synthesizer, a Korg MS-10. He combines his love of funk with electronic music and his early track 'Clear' cemented him firmly in the techno world. It was his influence from the past (Funk), love of Hip Hop and focus on future technology (he loved Kraftwerk) that brought this new electro wave into Black music. Though crossover success for electro was quite limited, it went on to become one of the most influential styles for the new electronic music of the next decade.
