African artists have been gems in the history of music and rap, garnering fame and rising to the world with great recognition. Hailing from Durban, South Africa, Nkosinathi Maphumulo as known as Black Coffee, is the first artist from the continent to win a Grammy for his 7th record ‘Subconsciously’ in the Best Dance/Electronic music album category.
‘Subconsciously’ is a stunning piece of work that featured the French star DJ, David Guetta and had reached critical acclaim and is now a Grammy. "Hearing that I had won, and then going up on stage to accept the award, still feels incredibly surreal and probably will for a little while" he expressed in an interview.
This special feat sets him apart from the mainstream World Music category most Africans have had their Grammies in, and Black Coffee is surely excited and proud of the prized achievement he has succeeded in to represent his nation on the global stage.
"The main reason I do what I do is to carry the flag of my country. To be recognised in this way outside of a 'World Music' category makes all of the hard work worth it," said Black Coffee.
The DJ rose to fame having performed at Coachella, in nightclubs and concerts in the music hub Ibiza, and all over the globe. He trademarks his signature style as Black Coffee’s penchant is for a true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but future-focused. Expect almo.
Black Coffee has come a long way to reach the top, having struggled in his childhood living in a financially strained household, and having to do basic chores to survive while facing times of poverty and starvation. He lost function of a hand at 14 in an accident the day Nelson Mandela was released from prison, but he did not let it limit his potential and talent, soon getting his big breakthrough DJ Oscar Mdlongwa in the Ampiano genre.
He expressed his future goals were to use his music and fanbase as a pivot to help boost and encourage more native artists to reach the global level and do more for the nation. Motivating the youngsters limited by resources and conditions, he said "It's not about music alone but anything that they want to do. The Grammy is a symbol that it is possible to get here."
