On April 15, 2021, one of the most exciting musicians, record producers, and DJs, Gareth Emery has dropped his NFT collection on Nifty Gateway, an online cryptocurrency marketplace for digital art. This NFT drop will feature five new tracks by Gareth representing five cities, including Tokyo, London, and Los Angeles. They come with staggered prices; Tokyo costs $1, with London at $4,999, and one titled Genesis (open to all) at $499.
Each of these tracks is created by a complex union of music, lasers, and 3D digital designs. According to the artist, each artwork was created by first composing the music, then recording a laser show, and after having filmed the laser show, displaying it within a virtual 3D environment. This whole process took about nineteen tiring months of continuous grind.
One of the collection’s pieces, the flagship one; THE METAVERSE, even includes a physical laser sculpture of the cube itself, hand-engineered in chrome, which projects the NFT’s show using a real laser in the home of the auction’s winner. The auction winner will also get to attend a future Gareth Emery show to watch their own NFT being performed by an array of lasers to a crowd of thousands!
For those wondering, NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, called a blockchain, that certifies a digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable. The unique identity and ownership of an NFT is verifiable via the blockchain ledger. NFTs of artworks are similar to autographed items. Digital art was an early use case for NFTs, because of the ability of blockchain technology to assure the unique signature and ownership of NFTs.
